Welcome to A World at War
Why World War II? It never ceases to amaze me how many books have been and still are being written and read about this war. I started to read them when I was a young teenager and continue to do so.
Things have changed in the world lately and I began thinking about the concepts of heroes and heroism, and how they really drive these new WWII books. It occurred to me that we could really find some hopeful and inspiring lessons in WWII related books that would most certainly resonate in today’s world.
Something about me
I’m a New York City girl and I love my city. I was born in Brooklyn, but I have lived in Manhattan my whole adult life.
I began teaching IT (information technology) to adults at an insurance company early on, where I learned to write manuals at a 6th grade level. So, it only stood to reason that I would soon be teaching IT to 4th graders in a public elementary school in the Bronx, which morphed into a full time social studies teaching job.
I eventually went to grad school and finished with a PhD in Germanic Language and Literatures.
I’m also a long time member of the Bank Street Children’s Book Committee. We read and review books for kids and teens for our annual Best Books List, which I am happy to say is free, downloadable, and searchable HERE.
I found myself attracted to Substack after I signed up for Simon Haisell’s slow read of Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall trilogy. I had started reading Wolf Hall a few times, but I never got very far into the book before life got in my way. I figured a slow read would be perfect and, indeed, it was a wonderful, enriching experience. And, well, one thing led to another and here I am at Substack (and still doing slow reads with Simon).
All that being said, I really don’t know my way around Substack as a creator of content yet (but luckily, my Kiddo does), so I ask for your patience.
